This enemy would be weak alone but add extra challenge to group encounters, and would also present an opportunity for the player to start using ranged weapons early in the game.
This was the early brainstorming stage.
Once I had decided which silhouette I liked, I started to play around with forms and shapes within the silhouettes. These are some of my favourite results.
I kept refining from there, and eventually settled on the flowerlike design on the bottom right, with just a bit of the snaggle-tooth from the bottom left.
These are only a few of the colour combinations I experimented with.
Tropical Frog Monster - Design process
I challenged myself to design a frog enemy for a videogame with visual attributes not normally found on a frog (such as spikes or feathers). I also challenged myself to consider in-game mechanics during the design process.
By the way, did you know that I recently launched a webcomic? It's a post-apocalyptic fantasy and is guaranteed to contain regular monster appearances. You can check it out at www.nulimbo.com.
